Sea or Mountains? Self-Guided Cycling in Japan

Pick the sea or the mountains first. Almost everything else about a cycling holiday in Japan follows from that choice.

The sea means the Seto Inland Sea, between Honshū and Shikoku. The Shimanami Kaido is the first bicycle road in Japan to cross a sea strait. Six bridges carry its path for bikes from island to island. Each one means a short climb up a ramp, then a long look across the water. Further west, the Tobishima Kaido links seven islands with seven bridges, and a 25-minute car ferry joins it to the Shimanami at Ōmishima.

The mountains mean the Kii Peninsula, south of Kyoto. Kōyasan, a temple town founded in 816 high in the Kii mountains, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. JNTO lists 52 temples there that take overnight guests. Reaching Kōyasan takes one long climb rather than many short ones, and the road then drops to the coast.

Sea suits a first trip, a mixed group or anyone who likes to stop often. Mountains suit riders for whom the climb is the point of the day. Whichever you choose, an e-bike is an option on every tour.

Questions Before You Choose a Tour

Self-guided suits riders who like to set their own stops. You ride as a couple, a family or a few friends, following the route in our app, with nobody else's pace to match.

A guided group suits those who want someone to lead, translate and fix a puncture on the spot. Our Japan tours are all self-guided, so if you're unsure, send us your questions before you book.

Before you land, we book:

  • Every night's room, with breakfast, in hotels, ryokan and small inns

  • A bike or e-bike with a helmet, ready at the start

  • Your bags, moved on between stays, one bag each

  • Any ferry the route needs, the route in our app, and a digital guidebook with our support number

On the road you pay for lunch, most dinners, temple and museum tickets, and the trains to the start and home. The tour page spells out what's in and out for that route.

Not for the bridges. The ramp up to each one rises about 3 %, over 0.5 to 1.4 km, so a normal bike in a low gear copes. Wind on the bridge decks can be strong, the bridge company warns, and a headwind there is often the harder part. On three of the bridges you share the path with small motorbikes, so ride in single file.

In the mountains, an e-bike changes the day. Kōyasan sits about 800 m up, and the motor turns the climb into steady riding. Choose one when you book.

Mostly in August and September, when typhoons can upset travel plans, JNTO warns. If one is forecast:

  1. Follow the weather warnings in English on JNTO's Safety tips site or app

  2. Ring our support number, printed in your guidebook, and we'll rework the day with you

  3. Keep off the bridge paths until they reopen. Heavy rain closed the Shimanami path between Mukaishima and Ōshima for a day in June 2026

Yes, and riding self-guided makes it easier. The faster pair can take a detour or a longer lunch, and everyone meets again at the inn. An e-bike evens out a mixed group, so give it to whoever finds the hills hardest.

Yes. Onomichi, where the island tours begin, is about an hour and a half from Shin-Osaka by shinkansen and a local train, Shimanami Japan says.

Send us your dates and the rides you fancy, and we'll join them up.

On the islands, yes. Matsuyama's January afternoons reach about 10 °C on average, by the Japan Meteorological Agency's normals. The bike rental shops on the Shimanami keep winter hours rather than closing.

Days are short, so set off early. Up on Kōyasan it is colder than on the coast, so ask us before you plan a mountain ride in winter.

Pack for a day bag on the bike, since your main bag meets you at each stay. Padded shorts, a light rain layer for June and July, sunscreen for summer and a power bank for the route app cover most days.
